Charlotte Grayson and the Shame Areas - Low Standards (Shy Bairn Records)

9 April 2025

There are many reasons to like Charlotte Grayson. But for me, I love her ability to turn the low points of her life, her romantic failures, her swing-and-a-miss moments, those parts of life that, in the cold light of day, you say to yourself…” What the hell was I thinking,” into brilliant songs. Now, I’m sure that she is a perfectly respectable young lady (she might not be, but I suspect she is, let’s assume so), which makes the often self-deprecating nature of her songs so much fun. When we laugh at songs like “Low Standards,” we laugh at ourselves. Her songs might be personal tales of love, loss, longing, and being a loser in the romance stakes (meant in the most respectful sort of way), but they are also sonic mirrors in which we recognize ourselves.

But then it is those moments of life that provide the best material. Sure, she can be fun and full of life (Drunk Girls), reflective and wistful (Old Flame), and she can sometimes be found telling the boy to get lost (Mug), but often, the joy of her music is that car crash romance element, one that we all laugh at and whisper in her ear “you think that’s bad, wait until you hear what I did…”

Not only are her lyrics so relatable, but her music is always brilliantly accessible. “Low Standards” ebbs and flows in choppy indie-pop waves, taking in both understated mellifluous guitar riffs and gnarly rock energies, the perfect balance of muscle and melody.

Charlotte Grayson’s music is a lot of things: bitter, sweet…bitter-sweet… reflective, joyous, melodic, serene, sassy, and groovesome, but no matter what mood you catch her in, it is always fun. And fun is infectious!
