ChiodoSupply - 1919 (Eisenhower Records)

6 January 2025

Old punks never die; instead, they take that energy and, attitude and outlook that dives them and apply it to different musical styles. In the UK, many such people were responsible for a firebrand folk-punk scene and sound, from The Levellers to Frank Turner; in the US they took that outsider spirit and poured it into what has become alt-rock and Americana. I mention this only to place ChiodoSupply on the musical map, and 1919 is a deft blend of country, Americana, folk, and no small amount of punk attitude found in the tales he tells and the sonic vision he holds dear.

“City Train” kicks things off in fine style, a cool and lilting blend of bluegrass and acoustic folk, a song about restlessness and reflection bathed in bubbling banjos and spacious guitars.

“Rebel Song” is one of those torch songs to individuality, being true to who you are, living life to the fullest, and celebrating this brief time we have, especially if you have a kindred spirit to share it with. “Better Than We Used To Be” is a neat, understated acoustic ballad, one that muses on where we might be going as a society, a country, a species, and a planet – a thought process that is increasingly more poignant as the dark clouds gather on the horizon.

1919 is a deft and soulful collection of songs, well-wrought and with plenty to say about one man’s hopes and loves and life in a changing world. Punk may, according to music historians, have been a short-lived affair, culturally speaking, and it perhaps didn’t change the world as it promised. But it changed people, and people can change the world, and they can do it one song at a time.
