As the lead single, “Bad Habit” comes screaming out of the speakers, the opening salvo of her latest EP APT 1101, you realise that we might have a bit of a problem on our hands. Punk was never meant to happen a second time! Year zero has been and gone. Didn’t we decide that evolution was preferable to revolution? Surely rock music, well, all music really, has settled down into comfort zones and conformity, having become an entertaining art form that doesn’t cause outrage and has little to say. Wrong! Wrong! and Wrong again, and I’m assuming that Chloe Star didn’t get that memo.
“Bad Habit” is a rabble-rousing, revolution-inspiring slice of punky, riotous rock and roll, and boy, have we been waiting for something like this to come along and shake things up for a long time. If some songs sound like change is in the air from the moment you hear them, this is undoubtedly one of them.
But if this collection of songs proves anything, it is that Chloe Star is anything but a one-trick pony. “Thigh Tattoo” is a wonderfully subversive take on those first moves of what might be a brief infatuation, a one-night stand, a casual fling or the rest of your life. “Rockstar” is a rock and roll anthem polished with digital sheens and dance grooves, and “Teddy Bear” picks up the torch of industrial rock from where Trent Reznor left it spluttering in the dirt all those years ago.
Rock music has lost its edge, its attitude, its aggression. Thankfully, Chloe Star has just dropped a sonic hand grenade into those comfort zones, doing serious damage to the musical landscape! Things might never be the same again.
