“The Thread”, the latest single from Chords of Indigo and the opening salvo of the new EP Evelyn and the Evil, feels, in many ways, like an album in its own right. And I mean that in the most positive of ways. Across its six minutes, we take a musically changing, sonically interwoven, undulating, and rewarding journey through nuance and crescendo, creative lulls and euphoric highs, evolving soundscape and genre balancing acts. And it is wonderful and wonderfully compelling stuff.
Blending indie grooves with more progressive rock moves, pop accessibility, and darker, alt-rock vibes, it is a song that showcases Lee Hornsby, the man behind this cool and conceptual art rock, as the master of the slow-burning dynamic, one which leads to some satisfying payoffs.
Narratively, “The Thread” is the first act of a sonic play. I hesitate to use the phrase “concept album” for fear of conjuring images of ’70s excess and all the associated pomp and circumstance, but that is essentially what the EP is, or at least its modern progeny.
It’s a soaring and cinematic track, one that neatly blends art and anthemics, groove and grandeur. As a taste of what’s to come, I find it hard to believe anyone will get to the end of this introductory musical/narrative chapter without wanting to turn the page and find out what happens next.
