Though I know him best as the longtime sax fiend for the DAVE HOLLAND QUINTET, CHRIS POTTER has been a member of and led many ensembles in the New York and international jazz scenes. The UNDERGROUND is essentially his fusion quartet, but don’t think that means it’s an ego-driven wank-a-thon. Potter and his cohorts (keyboardist CRAIG TABORN, guitarist ADAM ROGERS, drummer NATE SMITH) revere groove over flash, setting their angular lines against each other in service to keep the rhythm flowing. Potter is generous to his sidepeople as well – indeed, in a blind taste test it might be assumed this was a Rogers project, so prominent is the six-stringer in the arrangements. As such, Ultrahang is most reminiscent of *JOHN SCOFIELD*’s more electric works, and compares favorably. Proof that fusion ain’t always a bad thing.
