In a world where pop music has become deeply unsatisfactory and unappealing, rock music cliched and tired, and indie music unadventurous and unoriginal, Christopher Ellis manages to find his way to the mythical place where all three genres meet, a sort of sonic fountain of youth where he drinks deeply and reinvigorates the current music scene with his songs. And he does this by taking the best that each genre has to offer and working with those magical elements.
The titular “Gold” is a great way to kick off this three-track blast of an EP. It’s a song that runs on crunchy rock riffs and an infectious indie groove. It’s a buoyant and beat-some affair that revels in the honesty of a strange situation—one where he finds himself falling into voyeuristic habits due to the effect a neighbor has on his libido! It’s not only a cool song but one that The Gin Blossoms would have killed to have written back in the day.
“Barely Breathing” takes a similar pop-rock stance, just the right balance of energy and eloquence, muscle and melody. “Ragdoll” is a wonderfully understated alt-folk ballad, melancholically describing the plight of a girl used and manipulated, someone trapped in the glamour of what seems to be an ideal lifestyle—a model, actress, or celebrity perhaps – but one who is merely a puppet to be used by those pulling the strings and cashing the cheques.
In just three songs, Christopher Ellis proves himself to be a sonic force to be reckoned with, a writer of songs that tick boxes across the genres, have mass appeal, and are bound to find favor with critics and discerning music fans alike.
