How can you not love a song whose opening riff echoes with the roar of The MC5 and whose vocal snarl evokes Joan Jett at her most attitude-fuelled? It’s rock and roll doing everything that rock and roll needs to do, and nothing more.
When you get a song like this up on the blocks and start taking it apart, everything looks familiar – guitars grind and groove, basslines add the Nitrous to the engine, drums pound out relentless beats, and the vocals bark and snarl and threaten vengeance – which raises the question of why can’t more people put it all together as brilliantly as Cindy Lawson and her sonic acolytes do here? But that’s it, these things look simple, but are more than the sum of their parts…much more.
After rubbing shoulders and sharing stages with Minneapolis legends such as The Replacements and Soul Asylum, back in the day, she walked away from it all staying away for, in most peoples opinion, far too long. Thankfully, she is back, back to reclaim her crown, back to remind us how it is done, back to blow the rock and roll scene, and the music industry in general, wide open.
We live in a time when rock stars are few and far between. Perhaps the mystique has gone; maybe music is not as important to successive generations. Possibly, people have settled for something more comfortable and conformist. Well, all that changed a few days ago with the dropping of this explosive video.
Cindy Lawson – rock star, force of nature, and musical savior has returned to show us the way! Hold on, kids, Reckoning Day is upon us and this is going to be one helluva ride!
It looks like rock and roll is back on the menu, folks!
