My first taste of Circus Mind saw these New York indie-soul-funksters drawing parallels between the gentrification of their home city and the opening shots of the Revolutionary War. This time, we find them in a much less combative mood, in fact, the exact opposite, and given their penchant for smooth and groovesome, upbeat, and energized music, this sets up a wonderful contradiction at the heart of their new single, “Waste of Time”.
What, they ask, is the point of constantly pushing yourself to be creative? Is the struggle worth the end result? Like anyone who has ever picked up a brush, a pen, or a musical instrument, they muse over that fundamental question…why am I even bothering?
Yet, the musical vehicle that they have created to deliver the message —the sassy, staccato grooves, the smooth washes of sound, the infectiousness and excitement that they generate — is something that any creative would be proud of. It would seem that even in their moments of doubt, even when they feel like giving up, expressing such thoughts leads to the most exquisite and energized musical creations. Funny, huh?
And if those grooves echo with the sublime and mellifluous sound of Steely Dan, with the groovy psychedelia of Jellyfish and the musical intellect of Supertramp, then that just underlines how special this band is and what great company they naturally gravitate towards.
