If fairy tales were ancient ways of imparting essential knowledge to the populace, perhaps ways of commenting on important aspects of the human condition, or just shining a light on the state of the world, then “3 Little Piggies,” the new one from Citizens of Yeah! is the modern musical take on such a form.
In their analogy, one built on incredible blends of indie groove, synthy sonic washes, and angular guitars, we are the porcine threesome, and the wolf at the door goes by the name Cost of Living Crisis. And if the original little porkers advocated more solid construction materials to keep the wolf at bay, here, the proposition is to fight or, more appropriately, bite back.
So, combining dancable, if slightly dark, indie-rock sonics with a gentle act of rabble-rousing, “3 Little Piggies” is a poignant and timely song. While its gruff sonics and shimmering soundscapes might mark it down as being just another song looking for a slice of alternative chart positioning, something that it undoubtedly deserves, I’d rather see it as just another sonic wave of momentum for the disenfranchised and downtrodden as they build a tsunami of retaliation.
Here, at the bottom of the system, we have few heroes or leaders, few willing to lift their heads above the parapet and advocate a storming of the barricades. Perhaps it is to artists such as Citizens of Yeah! and songs such as this that we look to fire us into action. In fact, I know it! Who’s with us?
