This third solo single and glimpse into her forthcoming EP, Dear, “Love You More” reveals Clarity Liao to be an artist who effortlessly blends singer-songwriter vibes with R&B grooves, pop-infusions with neo-soul sass. And if that sounds like a lot of sonic balls to juggle, it is the deftness and delicacy with which she does so that is the real charm here.
All of the above makes for an infectious and effective groove, but it is the space between those elements that makes things flow so well. As is always with music that leans into a dance vibe, the bass lines are marvelously melodic, the beats prominent, but as the song ebbs and flows through lulling lows and gently contagious higher ground, it is those additional elements that are balanced on this sonic throughline – soulful guitar licks, liquid synths, shimmering percussion, and Liao’s intimate vocals – that are the icing on the cake.
And this blend of immediate groove and more subtle sounds that seem to enter the consciousness through osmosis, the lyrics, as the title suggests, speak of the intensity of unspoken, unrequited love and the weight of words left unsaid.
It’s a light and lovely song, one that stands on the shoulders of the giants of pop traditions but which is found at the ever-evolving cutting edge of that place. And as a taster of what’s to come, her EP can’t come quickly enough.
