Gothy sister duo CocoRosie’s latest single is a big deal, but for a reason that has nothing to do with the music. Sure, the two songs, “We Are on Fire” and “Tearz for Animals” are seductive, sneaky, and sultrily sexy in a way that previous records only hinted at. Sisters Sierra and Bianca Casady’s sound has a tendency to grow tedious over the long haul of an album, but set aside on their individual merits, these songs reveal a wonderful magic, and are perhaps their strongest to date. “We Are on Fire” has a deathly new wave vibe that would make Siouxsie Sioux proud, while b-side “Tearz for Animals” is a gentle ballad that features vocal accompaniment by Antony Hegarty. These things aside, what makes this little vinyl single notable is that it is issued on their former label, the once-feared-deceased indie rock standard-bearer Touch and Go. If this is the slow reentry into the music world by the venerable label, it’s a fine return for both band and label.
