Cogley - The Silent Sea (Cogley Music)

6 May 2025

There is a loose but wonderful thread running through the three albums that Paul Cogley has released under his own moniker. Terra Nullius, as the name suggests, is themed around the element of earth, Deep Blue Sky, relates to ideas and thoughts connected to the element of air, and now The Silent Sea…well, I’m sure you can work it out from there.

But, as these are the building blocks of all things on earth, multi-instrumentalist Paul sees such elemental connections running through all things and so uses them as a springboard to discuss broader issues, the changes in the human world and as a way of reminding people that we are all facing the same challenges, that they are not alone and that we are better off working together, that fear goes away when we seek to empathize, understand and love one another. things that seem in short supply today.

So, it is an album of watery analogies, riverine revelations, and maritime compassions. There are stunning instrumentals, such as “Lost At Sea,” a track that, rather than lyrically lead you to any conclusion, uses drifting sonic strands and the gentle lilt of beat and basslines to express a feeling of loneliness and distance.

“Searching For Signals” blends analog swathes of guitar with deft electronic motifs into a quest for meaning. “The Dreams of White Horses” is more obscure in its theme but no less compelling to listen to, understated, smooth, and sonically sophisticated.

Sitting somewhere between song and cinematics, melody and meditations, this is a stunning album that can be taken at face value for its musical prowess, but which really delivers when you start exploring its ingrained themes and thoughts.
