If the gothic sound was one of the more identifiable products of those creative post-punk years, then it was bands such as Corpus Delicti who not only picked up that torch and continued the story a decade or so later, but who genuinely gave those first-generation bands a run for their money.
Although their initial career was bookended by the start and end of the nineties, there have been several reissues thanks to Cleopatra Records and, as of 2022, a much-lauded, much-anticipated band reunion. And with 2025’s Liminal, we find the band heading out on tour to play both the new songs and fan favourites from their first musical chapter.
“Room 36” tells you everything about where we find them today, a powerful blend of post-punk-infused alt-rock energies, punky punch and dark sonics, stopping on just the less predictable side of the gothic sound proper but still bathing to some degree in its shade and mystery, in the same way that, say, The Membranes side-stepped easy definition and pigeon-holing.
“This Sensation” nods at some Bauhausian vibes, only less fractured, more melodic, less concerned with sonic art for art’s sake and more with energy and groove, both of which ooze freely from the heart of the song. “Fate” is cinematic and seductive, and the title track rounds the album off with pulsing, Peter Hook-like basslines and shimmering guitars. Although it is undoubtedly not merely feeding off early Cure sounds, it certainly makes you want to dust off your vinyl copy of Seventeen Seconds and give it a few spins.
And those in the UK can hear the band in all their live, primal, pulsating and near-perfect glory via a week of gigs all over the country. Whether you are reliving your youth or a discerning music fan, you want to make sure you are at the front for one of these shows.
