Crash Harmony - Orange Background (Magic Door Records)

27 September 2024

“Orange Background” sounds, to me at least, like one of those songs people just don’t write anymore. Not in any way to suggest that the song is dated or out of step with fashion (although given current musical fashion, I guess it is, and it is fashion that comes off the poorer for it), but more to point out that pop, for want of a better term, just doesn’t produce songs of this quality, this maturity, this deftly wrought, this…well, this good, anymore.

Of course people do write songs like this; Crash Harmony does, for one. However, as this is a song from the band’s first iteration, which last played together in May 1988, it is both a song from way back when and of the here and now, so the argument still stands.

Today, most people wouldn’t call this pop, but it is what pop sounded like in my youth when bands such as The Church, The Icicle Works, The Hoodoo Gurus and Big Star wore such a generic badge with honor. It is pop woven from deft electric guitar lines and pop infectiousness, rock adjacent energies, and indie sentiments, and, to be fair, the band was wielding such sonic weapons even before the word indie really meant anything.

Imagine if pop could be like this again. Well, if Crash Harmony continues writing this next chapter of their story with such a sonic aplomb, maybe they can sneak into the mainstream and show them how it’s done. I worked for the Trojan Horse, right?
