Crash Harmony - Velour Goddess (Magic Door Record Label)

21 August 2024

We know that Dave Derby knows his way around a good tune. If you are in any doubt, check out his work with Dambuilders and Gramercy Arms. He has the chops, the moves, the grooves…the magic pen and possibly the secret chord. But before all that, there was Crash Harmony a band where sonic teeth were cut, a band that was an integral part of the Yale Rock scene (try finding that one in the musical history books), and a band that moved in circles that proved that “rock legends were not just the leather-pantsed strutters on the national stage but dishwashing oddballs strumming in your neighbor’s backyard.”

But, because our formative bands always seem to loom larger in our minds than they perhaps should, no matter what successes or experiences follow, inevitably, Crash Harmony has returned to the fray to record a new album of old songs – songs that just wouldn’t lay down until they had their date with studio destiny. And so, with No One Asked for This out in a few months, “Velour Goddess” is the perfect taster, teaser, and tester of the sonic waters.

This is pop at its finest, with hints of The Go-Betweens, REM and The Replacements floating through it. I know we didn’t call it pop back then, and most won’t use such terms today, but what else would you call a song this infectious, this groovesome, this accessible, this full of fun and energy, this sing-along-able, this appealing to the masses….this brimming with all the elements that make pop so popular?
