Dama/Libra - Claw (Northern Spy)

Dama/Libra Claw Northern Spy
30 July 2014

In a striking departure from their respective styles, indie rocker Joel RL Phelps of Silkworm and Downer Trio fame, and G. Stuart Dahlquist, bassist of Burning Witch, Sunn O))) and Asva, join forces to create a compelling duo born from their respective strengths.

Claw begins quietly with “Moonshine and Lion,” a short, stark ballad of keyboards, sparse drums and Phelps singing in a slightly lower register than his normal tone. The following “Stravinsky” broods even further with droning organ, bass notes and monk-chant like vocals, the sound of a brother questioning his place in the monastery. With “The Chant,” and insistent, hammering beat leads Phelps’ vocals to a majestic combination of bass and synthesizers, building to a bustling fanfare. It’s not all doom and gloom, however, as “Been To The Water” delivers a catchy pop melody and “3C1” explodes in avant-garde excitement. “Only Medicine” actually delivers some metal, first with Phelps’ desperate screech, then with a chugging finale, while the closing, “Thine,” recalls the quiet beauty of The Lowland Hundred. This is a truly ambitious work of art born on passion, respect and trust, the outcome an equal representation of the individuals behind it.

Hopefully, between their busy schedules, Phelps and Dahlquist will find time to continue this project, as Dama/Libra has so much to offer beyond its genesis. May the followup come sooner than later.
