Bang! Straight in. No messing around. A big, anthemic and infectious chorus as the song’s intro… always a great sonic trick to play and a great way to hook the listener right from the start. But the clever thing here is that having played that timeless sonic trump card, Damien Musto then calms down and lays out some more considered and creative verses, thus taking the wind out of the listeners’ expectant sails. Clever, very clever.
The result of such ebbs and flows between the big rock choruses and the more acoustic-driven verses, not to mention other smart sonic changes of pace and poise that are found in the song, such as those that form the middle-eight, is a song with a brilliant shape. This dynamic intrigue keeps dragging the listener along with it…whether they want to go or not.
Rock, pop, folk, indie…it’s all in there, blending to form punchy riffs and finessed acoustic passages, accessible groove and bass-pulsing depth; a song truly made between pop and a hard place, one that will appeal to more discerning pop-pickers and indie-rock aficionados in equal amounts. And through this tapestry of majestic sounds and subtle sonics, the frustration and sadness of watching a friendship unravel and of dealing with the aftermath of emotions is palpable.
No one cares about genres any more, least of all those at the sharp end, those making the music (if they ever did), and songs like this are exactly the way. There was a time when an artist would be expected to choose a genre-demarcated lane and stick to it; with ‘Goodbye ‘, the opposite is obviously true.
