Dan Gober - Stoned Supreme (self-released)

18 May 2025

I mean nothing derogatory when I say that “Stoned Supreme,” the latest one from Philly-based music maker, Dan Gober, comes with a big side order of ’70s nostalgia. Quite the opposite. Whilst some might see such a statement as suggesting that Dan is out of touch with the fads and fashions of the day (and if he is, good for him), I see it as a song that reminds us what we have lost along the way.

Whilst indie kids try their hardest to seem angsty and earnest, contorting their faces into tortourous scowls to prove as much, the rockers are still dealing in bombast and brovado and, dare I say it, cliche, and the popsters have created a lowest common denomenator, please-all, money over creativity, look at me sound, Dan Gober, not to mention his collaborator, sidekick, multistrmentalist and all round good egg, Buddy Sweets, are having the time of their life, and doing so for all the right, credible, honest and authentic reasons.

“Stoned Supreme” blends glam-infused rock with infectious, larger-than-life pop. The sound is lush and polished, hazy and heavenly. Deft acoustic runs cut through the big guitars, spacious lulls balance the anthemic, fist-in-the-air vibe, and everything feels good in the world.

As a wise man once said, “The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.” If so, I will grab my passport, hop on a plane, and begin the process of citizenship for wherever this song calls its artistic and spiritual home. Who’s with me?
