Darius Christian is one of those artists who never ceases to amaze, particularly with the level of adventure and experimentation he injects into his music. That is what makes it stand apart from the rest of the pack, not just stand apart but lead where others are content to merely follow.
This time out, he gives us something that feels set apart from even his own eclectic creativity and “Entitlement” proves to be a mercurial mix of spoken word and big soul sounds, deftly rapped lyricism dancing over a big band sound.
Although this is about as cutting edge and of the here-and-now as you can get, which again is one of Darius Christian’s many traits, Entitlement does remind the listener of the conscious soul sounds of those seminal early seventies pioneers. And I would suggest that Darius Christian would have no problem being labelled as a successor of the likes of Curtis Mayfield and, particularly apt in the case of this latest song, Gil Scott Heron. I know I would.
