David Marx makes no bones about his love of all things Springsteen, and while there are some masterful sonic touches found here that, arguably, might be influenced by Born To Run era E Street-isms, particularly the gorgeous piano runs, it is more in mood and sentiment that “Trains,” his latest single, is indebted to that sound.
A delicate and reflective piece, one that remains vague enough to be poetic yet vivid enough to be relatable, the imagery of finding escape and simple pleasure in simply watching the trains go by is a powerful one. Whereas The Boss would be advocating getting in his car and following that train into an unknown future and Tom Waits would be jumping a box car to escape a dark and fractured past, Marx’s characters are content to escape the weight of their lives briefly by merely getting lost in the moment as the worldly train and all the dreams and possibilities, unknown destinations and second chances that it represents, rushes past them.
In recent years, David Marx has returned to the explosive world of incendiary R&B shows with his latest musical vehicle, The Handle With Care Band but it is great to see that he hasn’t lost touch with the delicate and often dreamlike sonic world that he has always described so well.
