DaVinci is really the one-man project of one Vincent Giovannantonio from Kings Park, NY with help from drummer Dan Hegarty, but for one guy, he packs a lot of volume. I mean, this CD is LOUD. Basically, it’s four songs of ’70s-influenced stoner rock, very heavy on the Black Sabbath, which is totally fine by me.
I saw DaVinci perform as a full band late last year at Twangstock on Long Island. I was duly impressed and managed to coax a CD from Vince for a review. I’ll admit, I was a little worried that it wouldn’t quite live up to what I saw, as sometimes you hear a band live and they sound fantastic, but you listen to their self-released CD and the production is either completely crappy or over-compensates by being overly processed. Fueled By Zen is neither – it’s full and in your face, heavy guitars dancing around the solid rhythm section while DaVinci’s gruff vocals tell tales of tough neighborhoods, working class living and righteous rock’n‘roll. My only lament is that it’s too short at only four songs. I crave more and I hope it comes soon because, quite honestly, DaVinci is one of the best bands of this genre I’ve ever heard.
Turn it up and go nuts. There’s nothing wrong with rockin’ out.
