It is no small act of bravery to choose to cover a song by an act that none other than Bobby McFerrin called “The best duo on the planet!”. But, of course, stepping into such iconic shoes as those of Tuck & Patti doesn’t mean that you can’t put your own spin on things, inject it with your own personality. And that is precisely what we find Dawn Derow doing with “Everything’s Gonna Be All Right,” aided and abetted by Sean Harkness on acoustic guitar duties.
So, whereas the original was an eclectic, busy, and jazz-infused slice of sonic art, this time out it is painted in more soulful hues and seductive tones. That’s not to say that Harkness’ guitarwork isn’t ornate and eloquent, it is, indeed, deftness and dexterity personified, but it sits within a more serene and spacious soundscape, the perfect balance of understatement and intricacy.
It is still easy to spot the jazz framework of the original, but now the light gets in, and there is a lot more room to breath, and room for atmospheres and hushed anticipations to pool and percolate, unintentional sonics that seem to rise to the surface unbidden.
Faithful enough with regards to the original, gently adventurous enough for Derow and Harkness to put their own stamp on the song, the perfect balance of reverence and revelation! That’s how you cover a classic song.
