Taking equal amounts of brooding nu-metal moves, alt-rock grooves, gothic shade, and no small amount of pop-infused accessibility, “Insecurities” is a single that is both driven by sonic echoes of the past and the sound of pop-rock, for want of a better, cooler term, being rewritten for a new generation.
It is a dynamic song in its musical range, running from understated interludes to searing highs, it is equally intimate and anthemic, as well as being accessible and epic, as the moment requires.
The message is also both personal and ultimately relatable. It talks of those times when we hide our true selves from our partners, masking those titular insecurities with lies and games so that we do not leave ourselves exposed and vulnerable. But it never works, and all we can do is watch those relationships spiral out of control, unraveling to crash and burn. And as all we can do is stand back and watch things fall apart, we know that we only have ourself to blame.
With the power of classic rock and roll weight, the drive of alternative energies, and a dark and sophisticated edge, it is a big and brooding song, but also honest, reflective, and heartfelt…if only too late.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but at least we learn from our mistakes. Don’t We?
