If you think that the trademark growling, searing, dark and demonic vocal style that defines the heavier end of the metal scene is the bastion of the guys, then the perfectly named Kay Bellows is here to show you that anything boys can do, girls can do better. Better because, as well, she has that impressive bowels of the earthy sound; she also hits more melodic yet muscular regions of the register and moves effortlessly and quickly between them as required. A great range, passing from the anthemic reaches of a more human voice to sounding as if she is having a particularly bad day in the eighth circle of hell… the one reserved for journalists and record executives, I believe.
So as this dark sister delivers her namesake song, the band creates a similarly perfect and imposing soundscape for her perfect and imposing sound. Beats pummel, the bass is relentless and world-shaking, and guitars scythe and shred as required, razor-wired and white-hot. Big is not the word – even hyperbolics like anthemic and grandiose, intense or incendiary, only get to the tip of this impressive and intimidating soundberg.
Understandably, the band opt for a traditional performance video; when the band look this cool on film, is this dynamic, this charismatic, this mesmerising, what more do you need?
