They say that you should write about what you know, even when what you know is mainly dark experiences that paint you in a less-than-good light. But it is such vulnerability, such honesty, such a quest for redemption, found at the heart of “Unknowing,” that makes it so compelling. If this were just a story plucked out of the air, it would be interesting enough; the fact that this is a personal narrative, a confession, an exorcising of, hopefully, an old life to make way for the new, makes it resonate with real depth that only comes from songs born out of truth.
“Unknowing” is a neat slice of hard rock, but the sort of hard rock that doesn’t rely on the obvious quick hit (pardon the pun) but instead marries muscle with melody, power with poise, a song laying somewhere between the balladic and the bombastic, and a sonic heart worn tattered and torn on a musical sleeve.
It explores addiction and fractured family ties, and glances up at the world from rock bottom as the narrator crawls back towards the light. There are no heroes, no winners, no glamour, no happy-ever-after, just an honest tale of the fall and rise of someone overcoming their self-imposed challenges in a quest for change.
Fresh starts can be hard, but they are often essential. Sometimes they change your life, sometimes they even save your life. This is one of those times.
