Desert Man - Penelope (Cornbread)

22 May 2025

There is a rich, lush, and sophisticated vibe that streams from “Penelope’s” sunny, sonic disposition, a musical feeling which can only be found at that magical place where an artist intuitively knows how to blend the infectiousness of pop, the effortlessly cool attitude of indie, and the robust energy of the rock world. Desert Man is obviously someone not weighed down by the expectations of genres and those who follow them.

So, it is no surprise that the man behind the track is a Grammy-nominated music maker, one with 16 albums as a singer, musician, and producer in various bands and orchestras to his name. Desert Man, the musical alter ego of Sebastian Gäbel was born during a mind-bending trip into the badlands of Southern California, though we won’t dwell on such an episode, but his shimmering, cosmic sound is certainly more redolent of that region than the cooler climes of his native Sweden.

But, whoever is behind it and no matter is geographical inspiration, it’s a fantastic song, one that is full of pace as well as poise, one that drips with the lush sounds of late sixties west coast creativity as much as it does the verve of modern indie.

And with a full album, Love Kills, dropping in a couple of weeks, this single arrives just at the right time and goes straight to the top of the “definitely check this artist out some more” list.
