We hear so much about artists going on a journey, implying that making a record is a spiritual learning curve or a quest for self-enlightenment. Maybe that is how some view their craft, but if I’m going to be taken on a journey via a rock and roll record, I’d much prefer it be the sort of trip that Desire Machines offers via their latest single.
I mean, listen to the lyrics, who wouldn’t want to go hareing across the galaxy on a surreal quest for the soul of American poet Marianne Moore, and drinking stolen Martian gin via Andy Warhol’s 1974 New York and with a laser-eyed eagle for company, rather than listen to some folk indie folk kid tell us about what they learned during their gap year!
And sonically too, ‘Searching for the Soul of Marianne Moore’ is a revelation, a stomping psych ‘n’ roll groover, a relentless motornik machine, Bowie-esque pop on the prowl, sci-fi soaked, surreal, staccato strange and ritualistic. It’s future-nostalgia at its finest.
This single is one half of a double A-side release (remember those) with its cosmic travelling companion, ‘Astronauts’, out on 2nd November. And as the name suggests, that promises to be another out-of-this-world sonic adventure.
