Admittedly, I really wanted to check out Dibiase due to my appreciation of villains from 1980’s professional wrestling. But what I found when listening to this instrumental quartet from the world’s capital of horseradish (Collinsville, IL) was a tight, riff-heavy hybrid of post-rock and Russian Circles complete with some lead guitar licks. “Hails From Dark Places,” kicks things off with a Metallica meets Thin Lizzy groove, then segues into “Property Of Speed”, which mellows things out a bit while maintaining an ominous feel. “12 Pound Tooth,” is a filthy, crunchy interlude leading into the once again lighter, “Engines Of Evolution,”. This dynamic works throughout the EP. Hit ‘em with sludge riffing and then some soft foreboding presence. Here in Chicago, we love our post-rock. Godspeed You! Black Emperor used the city as their U.S. headquarters and we have an excellent upcoming band in Del Rey. Add Dibiase to that promising list. Like Russian Circles, they are a bit on the metal side but combine atmospheric unease to make something different and enjoyable.
