Almost all music is personal, on some level, at least. But even in that rarefied and brave end of the song spectrum, the section that allows itself to be honest and open and vulnerable, few wear their heart on their sleeve in such an exposed and obvious manner as Digital Tapestry does on 17.
There is a clever mesh of pop accessibility and rock energy underpinning the song, but this is one of those times where, as smart as those sonics are, it is all about the lyrics, the message, the meaning.
Totally personal but ultimately relatable, especially for anyone who has lost a parent, this is a song of reconciliation and forgiveness, a reminder that relationships are complex, especially ones that cross the generation gap, and ultimately, everyone is just trying to do their best, even if that isn’t always apparent.
Only with the wisdom of age can we look back and put ourselves in the shoes of others and begin to understand them a bit better. Sadly, as is the case here, we all too often only find the maturity to do so only when it is too late.
“17” is a powerful song whose message goes far beyond the usual shallowness of pop and rock music. Still, it is a fantastic reminder that even something as every day as pop music can be a very emotive, effective and powerful vehicle. A very powerful vehicle indeed.
