As I sit here writing, the spring sun streaming through the window, the cat following the warm spot across the floor, green things sparking to life in the garden in front of me, the buoyancy and vibe of this new one from Dilly Dally Alley feels like the perfect soundtrack to this moment. A slice of uplifting energy after what seemed like a wet and endless winter.
It’s a blend of pop jaunt and jazzy jive that reminds me of the blend of poise and punch that embodied the likes of Swing Out Sister back in the day, a touch of jazz sophistication running through bright popscapes, dance moves seducing ornate sonics, although that might be quite an obscure reference, but it is one that immediatly fired through my brain as soon as I heard this similalry smart and sassy song.
Although exploring those feelings conjured by relationships that never manage to go the distance, that sense of being cut loose unexpectedly, like the music that drives it, “Hearts Like Caves” is all about finding the silver lining, and rather than dwell on the heartache, it instead celebrates the life-affirming liberty of such unexpected freedoms. The heart might have taken a hit but the world is your oyster.
It’s a jazz-soaked slice of liquid pop, a love letter to life, liberty, and happiness, and the perfect seasonal soundtrack to whatever the future holds. It’s also groovy as hell!
