Dirty Slippers - Where Did the Summer Go? (You and Media Management)

14 October 2024

“Where Did the Summer Go?.” That’s an excellent question. One that is especially pertinent as I sit here looking out the window to a sky of dark clouds and persistent rain. But, like all great songs, there is more at work here than the title suggests and the summer in question is perhaps a metaphor for a relationship gone wrong, and the cold autumnal winds represent the dark, post-break-up days. Just a thought: I may be wrong. But the critical line for me is “I’ll get you back,” a turn of phrase which could equally suggest a reunion or revenge! Very clever.

Even more clever is the fact that they spin this yarn over such brilliantly infectious music, an indie anthem built of motorik back beats and raw garage guitar riffs yet lifted into more effervescent and euphoric territory by plenty of pop touches and accessible sonics.

But perhaps it is as much the band’s geography as their genre that is the real story. Sitting here in the UK, a place that, along with the USA, has always been a leading light of the pop and rock world, generally speaking, it is significant that a band from Hungary has delivered, arguably, the best indie song of the year, storming the musical barricades, upsetting the old sonic order, and setting a new benchmark for the complacent West to aim for.

“Where Did the Summer Go?” is a fantastic sonic assault on the senses, Dirty Slippers is certainly a band to watch out for, and, if you happen to be in the UK, catch live on tour this November.
