As the argument between what constitutes alternative or classic rock rages on, as people bicker about what tag or label or pigeon-hole a band should be placed in,or debate where on the sonic spectrum a specific song sits, Divergent just gets on with what’s important…getting people dancing!
As the saying goes “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing,” and “Not Until It’s Right” swings like a muthaflippa’ and then some. Right from the opening cascade of boogie-woogie piano and jaunty beat, you realise that you have encountered a song that is not only infectious to the nth degree, but which won’t take no for an answer. It stares you down until you do its bidding, and what it asks, what it demands, is that you cut a rug, throw some crazy shapes, flip your wig, boogie, dance, or whatever the cool kids are calling it these days.
It’s also a self-fulfilling prophecy. A song whose lyrics advocate hitting the dancefloor with gusto set to a tune that makes it impossible to do anything less.
As none other than George Bernard Shaw famously remarked “dancing is the vertical expression of a horizontal desire,” and if that is the case, this song is the cheerleader and soundtrack to such a naughty idea!
I seem to be throwing the quotes and adages around rather freely, so here’s another… “Shut up and dance!”
