Doron Karavani’s life has been one of travel, food and music, all things that broaden the mind and bring pleasure to millions. And if the first two on that list have been more central to his life so far, life has decreed that it is now time for him to explore a career in music.
And if his time pursuing a living through food was always about bringing new rich and tasteful experiences to people, then it is the same approach he adopts when writing songs. Similarly, if the flavours he has worked with all his life have been that eclectic mix of cultures and cuisine that typify his Middle Eastern heritage, it is those same flavours that he finds in his music – African, Arabian, Jewish, Indian, Greek and Turkish sounds mixed with western singer-songwriter forms.
Time To Rise sees him blending these sounds to perfection. “Sky High” runs soulful trumpet through relaxed acoustica songmanship, while “Free Time” reminds me of the grace and beauty of Van Morrison at his best. “Not Tonight” is spacious and understated, western blue-eyed soul meets ambient eastern sonic drifts and “Catch Me If You Can” gives us the big finish, graceful R&B vibes that could easily be emanating from a Brooklyn basement venue in the early hours of the morning.
It would be easy to tag Doron Karavani as just another singer-songwriter, but, as Time To Rise proves, he is more than that, so much more.
