Fair enough, if I had had the great fortune to have none other than Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent, the rhythm section and driving force of The E Street Band, on my song, I’d put their names right there in the title. They say that you can tell a lot about a person by the company they keep: DownTown Mystic demonstrably keeps the very best company. Not a boast, more a statement of how well regarded he is in the industry.
But a rhythm section, even one as iconic as this, does not a song make; thankfully, our sonic urban prophet has given them a killer tune to work with.
“Hard Enough” sees him doing what he does best, energetic, foot-on-the-monitor, incendiary groove at its finest. As guitars grind out the riffs, the drums beat out a rock-and-roll victory march, the bass fires up the engine room, and pianos throw around cool motifs and chiming cascades, you realize this is the perfect blend of the timeless and the timely. Precisely the sort of track that these fine gentleman would have cut their teeth playing in their formative years, here polished up and reenergized to keep that timeless spirit alive for the modern age.
The single, the first release from the upcoming On E Street Remix project, reminds us of exactly why rock and roll will never go out of fashion – groove, infectiousness, energy, simple elegance, fun, and sonic liberation – it’s got the lot. And crams all of that deftly into just over three minutes.
What more could you possibly need? A purely instrumental version, you say? Don’t worry, they have you covered on that score, too!
