Druglords Of The Avenues - Gotta Light

25 February 2026

Druglords Of The Avenues return with Gotta Light, their long-awaited follow-up to 2013’s New Drugs. Fronted by Swingin’ Utters singer and lyricist Johnny Bonnel, Druglords distinguish themselves with poetic lyrical themes confronting the trials and tribulations of the working class but without the bluster or politics of ‘street punk’ peers. Bonnel has transformed himself into a prolific lyricist, and this new record, coupled with his surprising new project, Primitive Heads, reinforces his dedication to the written word. Druglords Of The Avenues explore themes of isolation, doubt, and introspection forced by the daily routines that come with balancing family, work, creativity, and the restless spirit can remain idle. Swingin’ Utters always boasted literary turns of phrase, but this go ‘round, Bonnel opts for a more straightforward approach that complements the quicker, more aggressive pace of Druglords Of The Avenues. The band does not vary tempos often, but brief melodic breaks enable some songs to produce memorable melodies courtesy of guitarist Matt Grayson, who also steps up to the mic for a lead vocal or two. Druglords Of The Avenues offer more thoughtful lyricism than their peers, and with additional attention to melody, they may rule the neighborhoods they embrace on their records.
