Wattmore - It's Called Love...It's Called The Blues (Checked Label Services)

25 February 2026

The reason why I appreciate old school blues more than most of its modern sonic descendants is that I get the feeling that it has lost something, something crucial, over the years since it’s inception a hundred or so years ago. What was once a primal howl from the darker corners of life, music made on the fringes of existence, the sonic representation of struggle and hardship, a soundtrack to just about (and often not) getting by, has become the bastion of widdly-widdly rock stars in Armani suits. And anyone wandering around in two grand’s worth of threads probably aren’t any longer in touch with what powers such music…if they ever really were.

Having teamed up with Australian country music legend Allan Caswell, Wattmore gives us the best of both worlds—a song totally in keeping with the spirit of the genre but one which feels fresh and contemporary too.

“It’s Called Love…It’s Called The Blues” reminds us that the blues, more than any other genre, deals with the affairs of the heart, and more often than not, hearts that have been crushed, broken, discarded, and generally stomped into the cold earth.

The song is a bundle of resonant, ear-worming riffs and ticking beats, chiming acoustic guitar and rumbling electric energies, a blend of dark and elegant groove and eloquent lyricism; it is the sound of the spirit of the blues whiskey breath whispering in your ear between drinks, and reminding you of the facts of life. And the facts are, you are going to get hurt – that’s just the way it is – intentionally or otherwise. Love hurts, and it hurts like hell.

Okay, you may be lucky and get things right, navigate love’s labyrinthine lanes and complex pathways, but if you do, you will never have the emotional ammunition to write a blues song and certainly not one as great as this!
