Duane Hoover - All Over Again (self-released)

23 February 2025

It is fair to say that Duane Hoover finds musical solace in all manner of British Invasion bands from the past, and indeed, the sound and style reminiscent of The Kinks, The Animals and particularly The Who seems to echo eloquently through his latest single “All Over Again.” But, here, it is not so much a comfortable revisit of past glorious that he seeks, but rather an extrapolation of what those same sonic energies might sound like today if they were breaking for the first time.

For the second time today, I’m faced with a brilliant reexamination of the past; (one of his fellow countrymen has just done a great job of tapping into the UK’s eighties indie-pop sound,) presented by someone picking up that sonic torch and running headlong into a bright new future with it. That, in itself, might say something about people’s dissatisfaction with the music being made today—just a thought.

“All Over Again” might sound more like the late-‘60s West London rather than modern-day Atlanta, but that is the whole point. Such music doesn’t have to stay stuck in its moment, and, given a neat reimagining and a smart polish, it can have another bite of the cherry, as the saying goes. this is that process in action.

Guitars crash and jangle, Entwhistle-esque bass runs contribute ornate melodies and beats groove and pulse. You are reminded of one important truth: music, when done this well, is timeless.
