It is fair to say that Duane Hoover has always revelled in the sound of the sixties, that his songs always echo, to some degree, with the innocence and sonic eloquence of that era. Never has that been more openly on display than here, his latest single, ‘More and More.’ And it is not about merely writing music that is a pastiche of those times; it is almost as if he doesn’t accept that those times have ended and is writing songs for today that help keep the past alive—new songs fuelled by older sounds, lessons of the past driving the potential of the future.
‘More and More’ is one of those simple songs that reveals its hidden sonic depths with each replay… after all, you know what they say about the hidden complexities that drive simple songs. It ticks along on that classic 60’s beat, organs swoon and swell, guitars gently riff, and his vocals are that trademark blend of world-weary and wonderful.
I love Duane Hoover’s sonic world; it both moves with the times and celebrates the music he holds dear. It is the sound of a never-ending past; it is the sound of time moving from a linear existence to a spiralling form, allowing us to pass through all manner of scenes and sounds, chronologies and creative pastures simultaneously.
