Duane Hoover - She'd Tell Me Over and Over (Lighthouse Records)

23 October 2026

Even if you didn’t do your research on Duane Hoover (although I definitely did, honestly), you would learn a lot about him by simply listening to his music. His latest one, ‘She’d Tell Me Over and Over, for example, clearly marks him out as a fan of 60s pop, particularly the British-made variety. I guess it just means that his own personality gets wrapped up in his art, and that can only be a good thing.

‘She’d Tell Me Over and Over’ gets right down to it, starting in such a way that makes you feel as if you have dropped the needle on the record a few revolutions in and missed the intro, something that you don’t find enough of anymore. Then this three-minute pop song, in every sense of the phrase, chimes and chirps its way through a pastel power-popscape.

Gently meandering, melodic bass lines fall in with unfussy beats; acoustic guitars are shot through with electric motifs, and bells ring out in the distance. Innocently infectious and brilliantly beguiling, it is Duane Hoover doing what he does best, reinventing his own version of the past for a whole new audience.
