Although there is a new album in the works, singles from which will be pinging on the radars of discerning music fans very soon, Wayward Path, Duane Hoover’s previous long-player, only landed a few months back. It seems too soon to move on, especially when it proves such a rich seam of sonic gems.
“When The Morning Comes” is the latest single extracted from it, and another excellent example of his ability to take past inspirations and turn them into music for the here and now. Alternating between spacious rhythmic grooves and fuller, richer rock sonics via the medium of explosive drum fills, this is music built on a platform of fantastic music dynamics.
And, as much as this is music made for a contemporary audience, through this song, you can hear the echos of an essentially British proto-punk landscape, one where artists like Nick Lowe and The Only Ones bridged the gap between 60’s songwriting prowess and the approaching punk revolution, between The Who’s formative years and The Kinks’ glorious and often overlooked, 70’s second chapter.
As much as I keep mentioning past influences (and why not? We all have them,) hearing Duane Hoover’s sound in the modern musical landscape is an interesting prospect, if for no other reason than it reminds us that in a world obsessed with polish and poise, style over substance, that it is perhaps capturing a certain sonic spirit, an edge, an attitude, is ultimately more important. Actually, there is no “perhaps” about it.
