Dynasty - Panther Style (self-released)

20 May 2024

There is a sonic battle at the heart of Panther Style’s music. On the one hand, there is a rawness and bite to their sound, as there should be with all good rock and roll; on the other, a sheen and sophistication that really sets them apart from the pack. And this is the clever bit: neither seems to negate the other; rather, there is a complementary force rather than a clashing dynamic at work. It is rather cool and very smart.

It may be their first EP in 13 years, but it sounds like they have never been away. “Dynasty,” the titular opener, is a brick wrapped in velvet and dipped in honey—sweet to the senses, soft to the touch but hard enough to knock you to the floor, should they choose to do so.

What follows might seem an unexpected choice of cover in anyone else’s world. But the fact that the only good choice of cover is an unexpected one anyway and that the band in question, The Cult, is similarly brilliant at the power/poise, groove/grace interface makes “Love Removal Machine” seem perfectly placed here.

“Fingers Crossed” takes them even further into the post-punk, shoegaze era, shimmering cinematics dancing through their more raw rock riffs. “Seeing…But Not Believing” sees these stylish cats go out the way that they came in—with a fire in their belly and a foot on the monitor.

Dynasty marks a triumphant return and the world is all the better for having them back in the sonic fray. Maybe don’t leave it quite so long next time; the music world needs you more than ever.
