Each Other appear to be a band brimming with innovative indie pop ideas on their first full length, Being Elastic. The Montreal based trio create a compelling blend of late 60’s pop, math rock and new wave, while simultaneously speeding past the sonic aspirations of their modern-day contemporaries.
On “Scared Witless, Really,” the boys mix dark wave licks with a GBV-esque chorus, singing “It’s been a while but I don’t mind/I’ve got my wrecking ball.” The lyrical allusions to subversion continue on “High Noon in the Living Room.” The tune takes a menacing tone thanks to its echoed vocals and prog rock chorus. The foiled lyrics, “The end of the world seems to overcome the drum,” are sung right before EO introduces a paisley underground guitar coda that leads straight into one of the LP’s high points, “Your Ceiling Is My Floor.” The song’s charmingly clouded pre-chorus builds through endless tempo shifts while vintage psych melodies reign supreme.
In addition to being classically sequenced, Being Elastic is filled with lyrical slights of hand and accomplished playing. Canadian indie rock has a new heir to its throne and their name is Each Other.
