Ebb & Nova - Call Me Queen (self-released)

9 May 2025

The Wizard of Oz stories have taken many forms from, books to films to TV reimaginings to live stage adaptations, and it is to the latter that we look when it comes to Ebb & Nova’s latest single, “Call Me Queen.” Having been approached to write the music for such a production at the Weinberg in Frederick, Maryland, this was one of the songs that resulted from the project.

It’s an unapologetic, old-school, foot-on-the-monitor, hard rock groover, punchy, dynamic, and fun. And it does everything that you would expect from such a sonic beast – guitar riffs soar majestically or coil in ornate complexities as required, the bass and beats power everything on, it’s foottaping, fist-in-the-air infectiousness: less expected are subtle layers of cello, always a haunting instrument, and even strands of theremin running through.

But perhaps the most unexpected aspect is as Lauren’s powerful vocals relate the tale, one written from the point of view of the Wicked Witch of the East we realise that, like all villians, she sees herself as the hero of the piece, hence her demand for people to “Call Me Queen.”

Rock meets theatre, literature, and music dancing in harmony, classic children’s stories getting a coating of classic, hard-hitting rock. What’s not to like?
