Ecce Shnak - Jeremy, Utilitarian Sadboy (Records Man, Records)

12 November 2024

Philosopher and confused altruist Jeremy Bentham didn’t really have the answers, but at least he was looking for them. In doing so, perhaps, he raised even more questions around critical issues of life, society, and what it is to be human—happiness, suffering, justice, politics, and the role of mortality in human life. Stimulating debate is perhaps more important than giving definitive answers anyway.

What isn’t up for debate is just what a sonic revelation Ecce Shnak is. With their latest single, “Jeremy, Utilitarian Sadboy,” they blend together an immense and often improbable set of genres.

On the surface, you are faced with solid salvos of mathy rock ornateness, sub-metal weight, and prog-infused punk—if that isn’t too much of an oxymoron. I like to think of it as the perfect attraction of opposites. (I’m sure Mr B. would approve of such an idea.)

But stand back a bit and contemplate further, and you will find pop infectiousness, classical grace, and even hardcore aggression all working in harmony.

A song as surprising as it is sublime.
