New music from Eddie Cohn is always welcome, but “Stop Waving The Gun,” his new one, is particularly pertinent. Although aimed at specific general societal issues, namely the lack of gun control and the devastation that results, in the wake of the election of a new US president and the concerns and controversies, entrenched attitudes, and point scoring that seem to be part and parcel of many modern elections, the message here resonates strongly, both as a general metaphor and a specific rallying cry.
Sonically, Eddie has always been great at mining rich pop sonics for infectiousness while wrapping those contagious sounds in more rock grooves and indie moves. Here, he pushes further than usual into the rock and roll realms to make his point, and it proves to be the perfect musical vehicle for his song’s subject matter.
Its alt-rock bass energy, spaciousness, and atmospherics, its slightly world-weary deliveries suggesting a tiredness with the antagonistic nature of the world; its snarling rock riffs and intense slashes of guitar; its balance of poise and power; its attitude and anthemics are precisely the right blend for the subject matter being conveyed here.
This is the sound of Eddie Cohn doing what he does best and then doing it even better. He has always set a high benchmark for himself and for others to follow. Here, he raises that bar even higher.
