We know that the world is not what it seems, that it is filled with facade and facsimile and falsehood, but what if you find yourself in a relationship with someone who also displays those same suspect qualities? We have all been there, wondering if you are the one doing all the real emotional mileage, the only one with a genuine commitment, while your partner seems to barely go through the motions. Yes, we’ve all been there, but not many of us have turned those feelings into song, and fewer still into a song this great.
Traversing the rock-pop divide, “Nightmare” is an anthem to the self-doubt, disorientation, and denial that come with being in such a situation. It is dark and spacious, stripped back and emotionally raw and authentic, a heart-on-the-sleeve declaration from Edie Yvonne at her most vulnerable, most open, most honest. It’s nothing less than a soul-bearing confession.
It is a brave artist who lets you into such personal places, and at times it feels as if we are looking over her shoulder, reading personal diary entries and innermost thoughts, so much so that we almost feel guilty for listening to her words. But as personal as such a song is, sadly, it is something that nearly all of us can relate to, and there will be few listening to “Nightmare” who don’t see something of themselves in it.
