Great as it has been to revisit Elea Calvet’s back catalog through her new interpretations and revisits, “Don’t Make Me Go” is where we look, not to a reworked musical image of the past but to her sonic vision of the future. Ahead of her album Spurious Forms, scheduled for April next year, this single is the first taste of where she is going, rather than a reminder of where she has been.
But, of course, things haven’t moved too far from the sound that we associate with her. Why would they? She has spent years honing her own unique blends of noirish chamber pop, shaded folktronica, emotive indie, and neo-classical strains.
If anything, “Don’t Make Me Go” is the sound of her digging deeper into her chosen sonic territory rather than a step away from it. There is a quiet yet restless atmosphere to be found here, a gentle ebbing and flowing of sonic ripples, mournful harmonies, and sensuous strings flowing over resonant echoes. All of these act as the perfect backdrop for her trademark hushed vocals, a delivery that seems to sit perfectly between the achingly human and the harmoniously heavenly, between vulnerability and heartache and between loss and longing.
If this is an indication of what the forthcoming album will sound like, Spurious Forms can’t arrive quickly enough.
