I’m not saying that Elea Calvet’s latest single is exactly an anti-Valentine’s Day song, but it does sit at the polar opposite end of the spectrum from the usual cheesy sentiments, ones that are the sonic equivalent of those foot-tall cards and love-lorn bunnies that get bought once a year as a supposed token of affection.
If “If You Ever Wonder” were a romantic gesture, it would be a gift of roses, but a bouquet wilting and shedding petals all over the floor. Such an analogy is a great reminder that love doesn’t always work out, that it needs tending and nurturing, and that, sometimes, things die, and there is nothing we can do about it.
The drifting, hushed sound and dark atmospheres that she calls up to make her point, the broken guitar lines, and fractured and creeping sonics, are the perfect sonic sentiments for an anthem to love…but love that is lost, unrequited, or failing.
And, as its gentle beats propel her waltzing alone across an empty dancefloor, as her voice moves from the emploring to the anguished, as her fitful dreams become stark reality, the song reveals itself to be the bitter-sweet soundtrack to a gothic romance, every bit as tragic as Wuthering Heights or Rebecca.
