I probably say something similar every time I have Norway’s finest purveyors of incendiary rock and blues, Electric High, under the pen, but sometimes it isn’t about trying to invent something new; often, it can be as simple as taking something long-established and simply doing it better than everyone else.
Anyone listening to their new one, “Thick As Thieves,” will recognize the rocked-out, low-slung, electric blues format they work in. But, rather than the sanitized take on the genre, which has become the norm in recent years as shiny-suited blues megastars bend the sound to their own will, this is blues with all the rough edges left on.
The riffs are gnarly and abrasive; the bass line drops like depth charges, the beats are energetic, and the vocals snarl, but all in the most accessible of ways. This is blues rock made out of iron filings and broken glass, energy and passion.
But of course, for all its jagged edges, “Thick As Thieves” does that one thing that all such music must do. It grooves…like a bastard. More than that, it struts, it swaggers, it slinks, it is music built on attitude, music that cares nothing about fads or fashion and goes back to the core of what rock and roll is all about. This is classic rock having a sonic arm wrestle with blues and it is fantastic.
Yes, why look for new musical pathways when this one proves to be so much fun? Why indeed?
