There is something of both landscape and memory evoked by this majestic debut single from Elephant Moon, something that is restless and reflective, full of heartache and pathos. So when you find out that the song was written in a small flat in North London, recorded on the Southern coast of Funen and mixed in rural Jutland, such a creative journey explains the sonic wanderlust that echoes out from the heart of the song.
As debut singles go, it is perfect; it sets a tone for an artist who seems inspired by the likes of Nick Drake’s minimalist moods and also captures something of the lyrical sentiment of perhaps New Model Army, a band similarly constantly seeking what might be over the next horizon whilst pulling at nostalgic heart strings.
It is a deft and delicate song, built only of lilting acoustic guitars and seductive sonics, musical threads which seem as fleeting and transient as the imagery evoked by the lyrics. And as the haunting refrain, “Tomorrow is a ticket we travel on, “ hangs in the air, our thoughts turn to our journeys, real and imagined, and our relationships, too. We see ourselves as the same hopeful traveler through life, journeying both metaphorically and in a very real sense, looking for whatever life has to offer over the next hill, along the next road, in the next town. We also think about and recall those who have shared that journey with us.
It’s a brilliant debut song; it tells us so much about Anders Dal, the man behind the Elephant Moon moniker; it tells us that here we have a thoughtful, emotive, and innovative music maker, one who knows that sometimes the quietest of music actually speaks volumes.
